Help?! Broadband usage limit - uk

Any opinions/advice would be much appreciated...

Basically, I'm moving into a shared flat next week and we're trying to sort out our phone/internet/electricity etc. Having researched my ass off (I’m already paying quite a lot of rent for this place and don't want to pay more than I need to) I had come to the conclusion that I hate BT given the hellish amounts of footnotes, but more importantly- the limits they put on their broadband.

However, my flatmate has just emailed me suggesting we go for BT for the phone AND internet and I'm just concerned that with potentially 5 people using the internet (downloading music and watching videos as well as emailing etc) that even their highest 40 GB limit is going to be too little??? I feel like perhaps my flatmate is only suggesting it as we are new to all this crap (oh what sheltered lives we have lived I know!) and she trusts BT whereas I want to get the best deal we can (Bt seems to be around the same price or more of other unlimited broadbands), at the very least a connection of the standard that we require.

So I guess my question is do you think 40 GB is all right for the 5 of us? Also, they don't just cut off your connection when you reach your monthly limit do they?? I have a sneaking suspicion I may have made some fundamental errors in my understanding of broadband as well, so if that is apparent in this, please feel free to correct me!

I have googled my heart out but no one seems to talk about shared connections for this kind of thing and thought someone on here might know??

Cheers.

They'll charge you loads for the bandwith above the limit. Bulldog do unlimited broadband that's really fast, but their contracts are 12 months cuz they're getting sold.

My internet company doesnt charge for going over the download limit, it just slows the connection to just above dial up speed until the next month kicks in.
I'm sure there would be a company like that in your area?

Have you got bigpond?

We have 3 people on a 10GB capped connection (the one where it slows you like llamaglama said) and we rarely go over, unless one of the brothers watches youtube all day. Then it's fucked. But we download lots of stuff and it's usually okay.

That said if it DOES go over the 10BG the router stops working because 64kbps is too slow for it to recognise, let alone split into 3 computers.
