I worried about my massive student debt for a while, and how it would be hanging over my head for the rest of my life, and then I came to the realisation I just described with the help of a calmer friend.

I don't know if I'll ever pay off my student debt. I'm in my 5th year of higher education with two and a bit more to go. On my current course I have my fees paid and get a stipend to live on, but because it's not enough to trigger paying off my loan those undergraduate debts (I don't know how much they are, and am not going to look) will just keep on mounting.

Nah actually I think I recall talking about my brother's situation in a similar thread a while back, he's like you in that he used a couple of years of his free tuition on a HNC/HND (IT) and so had to pony up his first year's tuition out of pocket to do a whole completely unrelated degree (Biochemistry or sth). So that's maybe why you were thinking of me.

I'm not sure whether he even considered taking a loan from SLC to cover the tuition, I didn't even know that was possible, and tbh I pretty much coached him through everything involved with being a mature student so if I didn't tell him it then he prolly wasn't finding out himself. But yeah, he just paid his tuition direct as a lump sum at the start of the year and that was that. He saved like a ***** to make that work, which is a bit unfortunate when you consider he could have just added it to that-loan-that-will-never-be-repaid.

Poor people grants have put me through 3 semesters so far, and I've taken out about $3,000 in loans for living expenses. After this next semester I'm transferring to a more expensive school...the idea of post-graduation debt doesn't really bother me all that much though. My reckless parents taught me how to deal with creditors at a young age (roseanne style), and I think my degrees (economics & math) will be fairly marketable. I may just go to grad school and tack on a whole bunch of new debt.

$0. My college was only $750 a semester when I started and $1000 a semester when I finished. My parents paid for it and I knew I was very lucky.

My one goal in life is to help my kids pay for college

Your problems aren't less legitimate as worries because lots of people have them, but yes, I think a lot of people tend to go through the dark cloud stage and come out the other side able to think of student debt as not too big a deal. I am one of those!

As badbadllama unfortunately points out, normal bank loans are worse than student loans and those are the ones you're better off trying to avoid.
