how much work is too much work? also: graveyard shifts

at what point... are you officially a workaholic?
or is that point not reachable if you don't have kids or a significant other?
and is it déclassé to be a workaholic single woman, for the rest of my life?

in my head, it's okay to do an 80 hour week, if you're single and extremely good at your job(s). and you can do this into your 40's and 50's and it's still socially acceptable? yes?
all my friends say no.

i don't have a spouse or children, so i feel like it's okay to be married to work.
plus i like my life, and have to pay for it all somehow.

right now i'm averaging a 78 hour work week, but lately that's been closer to 85. i CANNOT imagine doing only 40 hours. i feel like my hands are too idle, and not to be trusted with that much down-time.

ALSO: does anyone else work overnight/graveyard shifts? if so how are you managing sleep? and how long have you been doing it? I'm on year 3 of working graveyards, and it's starting to add up... I've heard some people do it their whole life, and others crumble at the 2-4 year point.

don't you, like, have a trust fund? why are you working so much?

how do you find time for drugs and booze?

i think 80 hours is too much, for anyone.

40-60 is fine. i used to work 60 hours a week or so. i had a nasty beer habit to support, plus i was paying ridiculous rent for a stupid, tiny studio in the trendy part of townz.

i think you need to move to portland, though, and chillax a li'l. weren't you coming here for school and such? what happened to that?

no.
i've been 100% trust fund free/no external help at all, since 2006.
but supporting the trust-fund lifestyle myself, working like there's no tomorrow, since 2009. but 2012 has been unusually over the top.
and there were poor college years in-between.
and i paid my own last year of college (private liberal arts school $$$) and have since paid off all but about $1,800 of the debt i was carrying while finishing school and supporting myself.

i never wanted to move to portland, my boyfriend at the time did.
portland is just... not my scene. i wish it was though. it's cheap and they have good restaurants/nice food, and it's really green.
other than that though...

i work extremely long hours, 7 days a week. my work is involved. if you want to be a lawyer, you are expected to work very long hours. it's not really an option. and there's never really a suggestion of being a 'workaholic' because work should be your first priority. if it's not your first priority then you shouldn't be a lawyer. well that's what lawyers all tell each other. and i have much more to look forward to in about 12 months time.

i work as much as i need to in order to do the job properly.

however sometimes i'm overwhelmed. i woke up this morning and spent 40 minutes thinking up ways i could avoid going to work. the only reason i got up and went was i received a text message from a client. and then i remembered i work with real people who are counting on me (and others) and you know. felt guilty.

i usually work early in the morning until late at night, most days. sometimes on the weekend i don't start as early. but i don't work like overnight shifts because that wouldn't make much sense.

i feel sleep deprived a lot of the time and i am quite disgruntled i think. but you know i think i'd be like that even without sleep deprivation.

BUT HAVING SAID THAT i also take off months at a time to travel. so. you know. it should be tempered against that.
