| | | Grown Up Email When did you make the switch from middle school/high school email addresses like boysmakegoodpets@hotmail.com (yes, i had that one for a while) into a more adult email such as your firstname.surname@gmail.com?
And yeah, I do see gmail as the most grown-up email service. Second only to work email addresses.
I tend to look down on people (a SMIDGE) if their email isn't grown up and they're much older than me. But I don't know. I've been internetting for years. God knows my real life friends (who are really awesome) are kind of clueless about internet etiquette.

| | | i've got one of each, my grown up email address i use for business type things, ordering tickets, applying for jobs and so on. ive had it for about 3 years- soo 16?
my other i just use for msn.
i think the less grown up ones are more anonymous- so i use it for stuff like joining forums etc.
oh and my student email address.

| | At work? I still use my silly email addresses but I put them in Finnish so at least most people I email won't know what it means. I have work email though which is name.name@blah.gov.au

| | | i really hate saying my email out loud in stores
like when you say it out loud it always sounds so retarded, no matter what it is and you always have to spell it out, even if its real words, spelled the right way, people assume that in an email all the words will be spelled wrong, so you have to spell it anyway

| | I'm not sure when I'd otherwise have moved onto a grown-up address, but I changed when I was 16 because my old silly email got hacked and the password and secret question/answer were changed. And the person that hacked it changed the secret question to say something like "another stupid email hacked".
I got access to my account again, but I'd set up a new email account in the meantime so I abandoned the silly one after that in favour of the more mature one.
And now both of those first two emails (both were at hotmail) have been abandoned entirely now in favour of gmail.
I run two email accounts now (not including work/uni ones I've had) and one is literally firstname.surname@gmail.com and that's my primary address for personal communication. I was glad to have gotten on the gmail thing pretty early b/c 1- I'd never have gotten my name like that later as it's fairly common, and 2- in the UK google got sued by some other company over their name and lost, so had to change the name for all new sign-ups to googlemail, which is clunky as hell. My secondary address is a googlemail one, and it's totally non-silly even though I could have made it anything I wanted as I only use it for internet sign-ups and newsletters.
Anyway, that's my email life story right there.

| | When I got assigned my e-mail address back in the 90's it was in intial.lastname@ntlworld.com format. That address is active even to this day and is the oldest thing I own on the Internet. I have always used it as I can hook it into things like Outlook Express for Windows or Evolution for Linux.
I have always, and I mean ALWAYS, been astonished at the amount of people who don't know what their pop or smtp servers are and cannot set up their Outlook Express to use at home...

Except I'm on a mac, so it's not outlook express. Same principle though.

This thread was also caused by this email I got from a co-worker, another teacher, and she had a cutesy email. She was emailing about work stuff. That's unprofessional. I really didn't care for it. I think my cellphone company still has a cutesy email I created a while ago so whenever I have issues I have to tell them what it is and I cringe a little...the person at the other end probably gets weird email addresses all the time.
Another thing with the whole firsname.lastname email is that I don't really have internet friends anymore so sharing my email address is not something I do.

| | | Well, when I first started using the Internet I was told NEVER to give out any personal information otherwise all the weirdos in the world will come knocking at your door to kill you...
That's all changed now with sites like facebook where personal information is king.
That said, I did read a few months ago on a hacker site a document that remarked how most hackers prefer to use real names now rather than hide behind an alias such as L337k1d - because it shows professionality (if that is a word!)
This really made an impact on me and since then I have started using my last name as a alias/username on forums ever since. I believe I enjoy people knowing my real name and can communicate better that way.

But I have been reading Friedman's "The World Is Flat" and learning a bit about the history of how we came to this point...the internet, networks, the Apache database (?), email, etc etc. And one of the things I love is that it makes things feel so concrete. They didn't come out of thin air. Someone created the ease with which we move from site to site, email to email. The other super interesting thing is community of geeks that create open-source programs. I use an open-source program now as a substitute for Microsoft word.

It accepts web pages requests from clients like you and me, and serves up web pages for us to look at, be it PHP (like this site), or HTML or whatever other format the site uses.
And, I think you should try a Live CD of Linux. A Live CD is where you put the CD in the computer when it is turned on, and it loads Linux straight from the CD. This way you can explore the world of gnu software (open source) and make the decision if you want to change over and do a full install. It'll probably recognize your hard drive too so you'll be able to play music or view pictures. But I've been using Linux since the 90's and hate windows with a passion.
I must admit, I did enjoy Vista for a few months, until it got a horrid virus which no virus program recognized. Basically, it destroyed Vista so I had no choice but to install Linux. I am using that same Linux install several months later without any problems too. Hey, I even got FireFox 3 to install! Now that is an improvement over FireFox 2 because I like the gfx better.

| | | Well, I am perfectly happy on my mac. I made the switch from Windows not too long ago.
I think what strikes me more and more about open-source programs is that people out there are doing this as a hobby, for the most part, to get their ideas out there. Recently there was an article in the NY Times about an open-source conference, I think, with hundreds of people.
