I thought it was really funny, but i have to admit there was some truth to it. It shouldn't be taken too seriously though. |

| | | hehe I thought this was a question and I was going to reply 'English Lit'. Only truly worthless in the right hands though, like mine.
Though you can get into teaching with it so...Philosophy is a lot worse! |

| | I'm surprised Sociology is not on there. My surprise comes from personal experience and common sense that actually only arrived after I had chosen my major & thesis. All those -ology majors...
Reading this list made me think of my friends. Aw.

| | | Yeah, that's pretty amusing.
But there are a crapload of graduate positions that'll take folks from any degree. A bloke where I used to work (accountancy firm) had a degree in something art-related and went to work in auditing. Obviously he started on the bottom rung, but so did every other graduate, even the ones with relevant degrees.
I didn't even think there was such a thing as a degree in dance? It blows my mind a little. Maybe I'm not understanding what it is. Obviously they must be proficient at it before they go to get their degree in it (as you would be with, say, music) and there's probably a reasonable amount of academic stuff involved like history and that, but I didn't imagine that one would get a degree in dance to be a dancer. If you were ever going to make something of yourself as a dancer, wouldn't you have gotten on your way with it well before university age, in terms of getting actual work? I'd say if it hasn't at least started happening for you by age 18, you might as well just pack it in, save yourself the heartache, and go get a useful degree. And any of the others on that list are more useful by comparison.

| Maybe if you want to be a fitness instructor/dance teacher?
Then again I don't know. I never considered doing anything non-academic at University.
We joke sometimes that NOT having a degree in Media Studies is worth more than having one...

We joke sometimes that NOT having a degree in Media Studies is worth more than having one... | Aye, fair point. I can't imagine there being that many dance graduates anyway, so there are probably enough step aerobics and ballet classes needing taught to see them all in gainful employment. Shame most of them probably go into uni with bigger aspirations. But then, I'm sure a ton of other students do too.
Haha, aye, media studies seems to be the degree that gets the most flak here.
I've taken a fair bit of "...and what are you going to do with that?" re going to study linguistics. But then when you start explaining it to folks and they realise how complex it is, they tend to go a bit blank and just leave it at that. Truth is, I don't know what I want to do with it, but I figure if I waffle enough about it, they think it sounds really impressive and "sciencey" and so obviously really amazing for career prospects.

Agreed with kesh about the ten million indignant replies. Most of the replies: "I majored in music and make $90,000 a year." Likely story. |

don't feel too bad. i'm doing english with a literature/film concentration.
also, i want to know what exactly deems these "worthless". the fact that you can't make tons of money with them?
aside from that, the english/art/latin/degrees that aren't business or computers are hardly worthless considering the teacher shortage in many places in the US. but wanting to teach is probably worthless too, i imagine.
and yes i know the original poster said "don't take it too seriously" but these are sentiments that a lot of people have. much like jayne, the "well what are you going to do with it?" gets old after a while.

Aren't a lot of the bums and homeless people you see on the street former lawyers and doctors who let their careers be ended by alcohol and drugs or is that just one of those urban legends? |

nobody ever picks it because it doesn't seem fun or like it'll make you a million dollars. so really, it attracts nerds, social recluses, and obsessives (i'm talking about that one kid who can rattle of every battle and factoid about WWI, or makes replicas of battleships and airplanes, or the girl who chimes in with some crap about women's history in every single history class "well, women at the time..." which i always interject with "nobody cares" under my breath).
i'm gonna say history has been the greatest major ever? or atleast the one with the most sarcastic and jaded professors. | |
