Studying Nursing In The UK

who's done it?

where?

did you love it?

was it killer work? ie, if you miss one class do you find it hellish to catch up?

i really want to study nursing starting sept 2009 but dont know where to start!! im not even sure where does it or how to apply...there doesnt seem to be a website that specifically lists all the studying nursing options, or am i looking for the wrong thing...?

also, i want to move outta NI so i was thinking maybe edinburgh or somewhere in england

this might sound like a silly question but...is there like...halls of residence for nursing students? or am i sposed to move to a different country and find a flatmate straight away? eek

yeah there are halls of residence for nurses. i think you just get mixed in with students of other subjects from the university. if youre english studying in english school for nursing you get a grant too and dont have to pay for uni at all. not sure if your not from here its the same. but it might be. id look into that too if i were you!

im 2nd year now. one more year to go!!

yeah you'll get a bursary if yr from northern ireland, its just under £500 a month at the moment. one of my classmates is from err i cant pronounce or spell it so i wont bother.

my uni has student accomodation (only for nurses and nhs workers) but its very expensive and small and horrible. most people who live there moved out after a couple of months or so in a group to rented houses as its cheaper. about 99% of the people who live there are irish... whats up with that? is it impossible to train in ireland?

also be careful about what uni you choose. Do lots of research! my uni's accomadation is a £7 train journey to class. 1hr walk to the main hospital for placement. what if one of your placements is a proper mission away and you start at 7am with no trains or buses. you have to really plan and think this out.

save lots of money. go to a good uni (london/bournemouth) ?? where you live on campus and getting to clinical placement isn't a stress fuelled adventure.

good luck! do you know what branch you want to do?

i hope i haven't put you off but please please think about all this before you come over, lots of people had to go back home from my cohort because of my shitty uni and running out of money.

Im in my final year in the west midlands.

Im currently on my critical care placement in a busy a&E department, just finshed my 4 nights.
To be honest, it is stressful and they put alot on you, with your full time working week, plus assignments, clinical placement documents, revision and reading, not to mention the shitty attitudes of some of the staff sometimes.

However, i LOVE my placements, you always learn loads and you feel like you are part fo the team, i hate uni lectures, find it better learning in practice.

make sure you also check out the uni's before hand, mine don't give you enough support in my opinion, and do not prepare you sometimes for what you come across in the real world.

The bursary isnt great, however, if you join an agency and let them know you are a student nurse, you will have no problem, they pay really well too and when you qualify and may not have a job lined up, you can always work through agency, when you want and however often you want.

Hope this helps

xxx

Ohh i forgot to mention..we started with nearly 200 students and most of them have dropped out...it just shows that we dont get enough support. Make sure you get yourself a good personal tutor and make sure you go to assignment tutorials!! xxx
