| | | Depression over bad economy (U.S.) This probably belongs in news & politics, but whatever. Anyone else a bit depressed over the economic situation in the U.S.? Gasoline being more expensive than most cigarette brands, etc.
And where I live, there are few jobs. Not even for well-qualified college grads. I just got out of college and this is pretty depressing and soul-killing. I am probably going back to my old job which I liked but pays kind of low. It's like you get pumped up for a professional job to find that there are few professional jobs available.
Anyway, I just needed to vent.

| | | I know. I'm an education (teaching) major, and there seems to be zero teaching jobs in my area since they basically gutted the school district's budget (not the district's fault, it's really an indicator of how bad everything else is in the state and the general U.S.).
Making things worse: George W. Bush's daughter's "Lavish Weekend Wedding Extravaganza!" Yeah, GREAT PR MOVE when people all over the U.S. are eating ramen three times a day. She should get married in city hall for $90, seriously.

Bush's daugher should get married in city hall just like "all of those POOR people."

The only issue is my marriage, I'd have to leave my husband here as he's employed full time. That would suck. But I really would like a job and a new adventure...

Bush's daugher should get married in city hall just like "all of those POOR people." | well its just another example that this is a rich mans country. which is funny because the majority of its citizens are impoverished, living on government funding, or close to being impovrished.
i have a friend who works for an oil company, he said it only takes 5 cents to make a barrel of gasoline. and then they turn around and sell it for 100 dollars. what i want to know is where all that money is going. |

| | | It is super fucked up when you realize it's cheaper to smoke cigarettes than it is to buy gas now. (At least generic brands)
So much for the argument that smoking is bad. They should change the Surgeon General's warning to: "Smoking is way cheaper than driving. So just become a recluse and smoke up. Smoking is death but cheap death"

| | | yea, it's a real fuckin bummer. my boyfriend was supposed to get a nice raise at his job, but cos of the economy he got a dinky one. yes it's better than nothing, but we could really use that nice raise.
luckily we don't have a car [he takes the bus] so we don't need to buy gas. i saw a story on the news about how motorbike sales have shot up cos they're really good on gas. this one dude had a moped [spelling?] and it only took eight bucks to fill it up and it got 110 miles to the gallon. that's awesome. |

I agree with you. I have a 2yr degree. Was working on my 4yr degree. Took some time off to spend with my daughter. Now it's like gee why bother going for the four if you get out and find there's no jobs for the thing you spent all those years for? |

| | | not just US, seeing as how you buy up the rest of the world's exports we'll all go down with you, to some extent.
but more than that the uk has already had a run on a bank and the government had to take it over, all because of the US sub-prime mortgage collapse, which has also upped the price of all mortages here and collapsed property prices, fucking our economy |

| | | I feel ya on the general shittiness
if its any consolation, the sector that I'm getting my degree in is totally state funded and there is a recruitment freeze that's indefinite at the moment, so literally, NO JOBS. There's only charitable organisations but they pay crap to an extent that I'd almost prefer the dole. Just my husband working is not cutting it (AND he couldn't get a job for what he graduated in either, which is well doubley bollocks)
As for the oil business, I'd like to say its partly China's fault. Their demand for it is higher than ever with their factories booming, foreign companies can't meet the demand high enough and therefore drive prices up. MY two cents theory but feel free to correct me. |

| | | it doesnt depress me and my situation, i suppose. i need to find another job by july, but I am not too worried about it yet. i am worried about my parents, though. my dad has been unemployed for a couple of months and i dont know for how much longer. it worries me that they are having a hard time financially, but he is also very depressed. he has never not worked so he feels inadequate. im helping as much as i can, but im living in an expensive city and 'all that i can' can't be very much.
