| | Skiving I work for a mini version of a chain supermarket type shop.
I work weekends and two afternoons in the week.
The first thing is I hate working there, so much, I hate living here since I don't have anyone to talk to in this whole city. This weekend I really REALLY want to get out of here. I can't get out during the week even though I don't work because everyone I know is working so no one will have me.
Literally I haven't spoken to anyone apart from my parents and the random people I work with since I started there two months ago now, which isn't that long (especially since there are people there who haven't had more than one weekend off in two years) but I am going completely fucking crazy.
But I can't find another job or a better job, so I can't quit without admitting that I'm a whiney little bitch.
So I'm thinking this weekend, when I actually have a chance to see someone and not be caged up, I might just not turn up. But I've never been off a job because I was actually ill before, never mind faking illness. When you start these things they act like not going in is a massive deal, but I always assumed an element of that is just to scare you.
I'd just quit but I need two weeks notice and by then I'll have totally lost it and missed my chance anyway, and I don't even care if they don't pay me for it because its barely worth it, but I have a pretty sparse actual employment history and I can't be fired or look like a dosser.
Who here skives work ever?
The fact that they probably owe me holiday by now but will go to the ends of the world to avoid giving it to me, and that I know no one will swap shifts, makes me think this is the only way.
Should I just phone in sick for two days? |

Its so rubbish. Did I bother to get a bloody degree just so I can unpack ready meals at 7am on a Sunday morning?
To be fair I haven't done a lot else as far a well planned career paths go, but thats my own fault so I don't feel as much riotous anger about it. |

| | Unfortunately places like that tend to be the least tollerant of sick days, and they'll probably genuinely struggle to cover for you. I'm so sorry I've been moaning about work a lot but I'd hate to be trapped somewhere like that.
What's your degree, if you don't mind me asking?

What's your degree, if you don't mind me asking? | Psychology. I mean I got a good grade and its from a decent Uni and everything, so its a bit pathetic of me to sit around in a shit job moping, but I still feel trapped just because I can't find anything and don't have the drive to make decisions.
Last sunday I went in there and for various reasons I was the only one stacking the shelves (which is normally a four person job), and then they were bitching when it wasn't done fast enough. Thats not worth £5.75 an hour, and I'm never going to be able to move out with that much.
Like part of me feels bad in case they lose money but then part of me really doesn't give a shit. |

| | I skive off once a month or so. I just can't be bothered to go in.
Like, sometimes the bed is just too warm.
Or I need to shave and I just don't want to.
Or some other arbitrary reason
Silly things, so obviously there's a reason behind them. |

| | | Skive but phone in sick rather than just not turning up.
Going out will do you good and might give you the kick up the ass you need to get yourself together job wise. You deserve a lot better by the sounds of things. |

| | I can relate to this, I didn't realise how important it is to work hours that mean you have an actual social life until I nearly went mental. Working weekends when all your friends don't sucks.
I'm not in that job anymore but if skiving was on olympic sport I'd win gold |

I feel so bad for people who're in jobs where you can't get away with odd sickies providing you're on top of your work. The girl I'm seeing pulled one last week, she works for a law firm and they want a urine sample (!) for when she gets back, I didn't even realise that was legal.
