| Hey hey, I have done two dissertations now (both 10,000 word ones), one for my undergraduate, one for my post-graduate and they really aren't too bad. Its just overwhelming when you have to start thinking about them from scratch.
The important distinction to make is- is it primary evidence based (i.e. do you have to collect and analyse the data) or is it essentially a lit review? The latter tends to be easier. Do you have an area of study chosen? Your tutor should help you narrow down on titles and wording etc and be able to talk to you about whether your idea is realistic or not. In the beginning, your word limit will probably sound like a lot and you will think Hey, I can do masses, but actually you will probably be quite limited time wise in terms of what you can study and word limit wise in what you can write about. If I were you, I'd definitely start doing some work on it in your summer break. I did that with my undergraduate dissertation and boy did I feel smug when everyone else was shitting themselves as they were coming up to Finals time and they still had craploads to write on their dissertation and I had had a rough draft down since September. For my masters dissertation I was less smug. I got a project in the first week of July. It was due in on the 24th of August. That was a BUSY 7 weeks. |
