| | | Master's degrees: can someone explain them for me? ...obviously, I know what one is, but I don't get how to go about finding them or applying? All the online resources I've found seem pretty hopeless.
I'm in a bit of a career rut and I think doing a related MSc might help out, as well as giving me a year of space. I'm worried my 2:2 might hold me back but I was very close to the 2:1 border and I've got 6 years fulltime industry work behind me now.
Have I left it too late to apply? I'm not sure when you're supposed to do it for masters'.

| | | I'm nearly finished my masters. I didn't even want to do one, I just wanted to do a course that would teach me how to make films. Now I've nearly got an MA in filmmaking, it seemed a masters was all that was available at my level.
I guess the thing to do if find a UNI you'd like to go to and check their syllabus. |

I could scout individual unis but it's a pain and they don't seem to make the courses themselves that easy to click through.
Mastersportal.eu & Masterguide.com seem useless unless I really have missed the boat and they don't list anything you can't apply for.

| | | Masters can be done at literally any point in your life and if you have a lower grade from undergrad, its better to leave it a while and get some relevant experience in the field before you apply for one.
Depending on what masters course you want to do, you may have left it too late. Most of the time you want to have apps in by now but some places let you apply later. Many have staggered application times through out the year but you are more likely to be successful if you apply in the early cycles.
What field do you want to do your masters in? |

| | | I want to do a Master's, not so much as an end in itself, but just to see if I have what it takes for further academia - if I don't, then I still have a master's that will bump me up the pay scale when I go back to teaching. I'm already thinking of cool ideas for a thesis, even though I don't think I'll go back to varsity until 2012. It's just so exciting even thinking and talking about all this.
What's your major, Spazz? What topic would you do your thesis on?

Bort: my BSc was computer science/software engineering, ideally I'd do something related but more specialised. Something AI or HCI (human-computer interfaces) would be ideal but I don't know how picky I can get.

| | | i would make some decisions on what cities or universities you would prefer and then investigate them on an individual basis.
i think as long as you show commitment and enthusiasm you should stand a chance at decent unis. I have a friend who did a politics postgrad degree at york with a 2.2.
in answer to walterboy, i did a research one, and it cost £3200, (although i didnt pay it) and my workload was only about 8 contact hours a week. i don't know how that compares to research degrees, but i think it might be dependent on the subject, for instance research degrees in science subjects tend to be quite heavy.

| | | I did a taught masters, it cost about £4,000 (although I later got a £3,000 grant for having done my dissertation, so that obviously reduced the costs somewhat), the workload was quite high, I had 9.30-5 days most days although you didn't HAVE to attend (they didn't take a register) and we had 4 assignments each term but hardly any of them took that long... | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
