| | | Goldsmiths College, London does anyone go there/was anyone once there/does anyone know someone there/have any info on this place at all?
i never even considered it for undergradz but i've found a postgrad course there that looks really great...
what's the place like as an institution? how big is it? it seems small, does that mean it has the feel of a campus university? what's new cross like? where do students tend to live? what are the typical students like and what's the feel of the place? actually just tell me anything you know?! i can't find an alternative prospectus (am i showing my age?)
thanks in advance! |

| | | I went there for an open day once and Brian Molko is part of the alumni ha ha!
I chose not to go coz my gut feeling said it wasn't right for me. New Cross was a bit far out and the surrounding areas weren't very appealing or homely enough. The halls didn't look great either and I didn't think the facilities were up to much, it all looked a bit shabby.
That's just my opinion though and it's really revered as a uni but if you're looking for a uni with a cosy, campus feel this isn't one to go for.
If I remember correctly it's quite a popular choice for english students so most people that tend to go there are creative types (and probably Placebo fans from back in the day!)
Ha...good luck |

| | | I don't live that far away from New Cross. It isn't a great place, but 'people' keep saying it is 'up and coming'. There's a couple of pubs that have good things happening (Amersham Arms, New Cross Inn). Never, ever, ever go to Venue. Actually, do. But accept it will be shit and you'll have a good time. The transport links into central London are good.
As for Goldsmiths, everyone I know who went there had no real complaints. But they all live near me so never had to deal with student accommodation.
Sorry, this is more about the area than the college. |

| | | postgrad politics? (taking a guess) in certain circles lse, york, exeter, sussex, aberystwyth and st andrews are considered 'good' for research for politics.
I know goldsmiths is good on arty stuff and has quite a rep for sociology, and you cant go too wrong on any institution that is part of the university of london.

| | | I nearly did an MA in design something-or-other there. But I just didn't like the area / campus etc. It is kind of grotty alright. It's a really arty crowd that go there though — probably the shabbiness seems cool after a while.
My mother studied art there. |

thanks rockandrollbarbie and duchess, too...i'm liking what i hear about the far-out-ness. i went to lse (not considered much good in my circle which consists soley of me!), it's right in the centre, bit hardcore for me.
i'm really liking everything i hear about goldsmiths so far...i don't mind shabby and i really like the idea of everyone there studying arts subjects |

| | | haha oops, sorry, don't know too much about pgce's, but like, i said it's got a good rep, especially in sociology and artsy stuff, and its got the seal of being part of the university of london. i remember you went to lse, i have never, ever heard good things about it from people who have actually studied there...amazingly priggish and snobby given its founding apparently.

| | | my best friend does textiles there and she LOVES it. She says that some of her lecturers are a bit wanky though, but that might be because they dont particularly 'get' her work (which is amazing) |

I had a History lecturer who went there and was highly proud of it, and encouraged the people in our class going on to honours that they should aim for LSE if they want to do a Master's degree in Economic History. I'd always thought it must be really well liked...

| | | i'm currently doing english ba at goldsmiths, i'm in my second year.
i absolutely love goldsmiths and i never want to leave, it's quite sad really. new cross is a bit crappy but the rent is fairly cheap (for london) and it's really well connected transport-wise. as for being 'far out', it's only in zone 2. there are some good pubs like the amersham arms, the montague and to an extent, the new cross inn.
the students are an arty, fashionable bunch which was a little intimidating at first. (until i cut all my hair off and became one of them which is a bit shameful.) however, it's a small place and the student body is quite close-knit. it's friendly and really good fun. since most of the students live very near college (because it's affordable) we socialise a lot outside campus too.
yeah, it's a little shabby but i like to think of it as homely. and it's super good for teaching qualifications, very prestigious.
hope that helps.

Creativity in spelling and sentence construction is not directly synonymous with misunderstood brilliance. Just try harder, because actually it was your ideas that were shit, but I'm not meant to tell you.

| | | ahh, i HATED newcross, SO much, its so horrendious and ugly and just nothing there is pretty or nice or happy
the uni i hated aswell, the first thing they said on the first say was..if youre having personal probelms..dont come to me because thats not what im here for
everything was SO serious and abit pretentious and just NONE fun.. and i got REALLY REALLY depressed...THEN after about 2 weeks of crying hysterically i tired to leave but my 'personal tutor' wouldnt let me, she said she was going to refuse to sign my release form (After going on at me for about an hour how the uni i wanted to move to was 'shit' ad how she knew teachers who worked there and hated it, and I ALTHOUGH SHE HAD NEVER SPOKEN TO ME BEFORE, would hate it, and i should just STICK it out at goldsmiths) so i went ape shit and went to the head of department and just kinda made hysterical noises at her until she did.
i made ONE friend there who i really do love
but apart from that the whole goldsmiths experince was proberly the worst time of my life so far...
i also HATED the course
.................................................. .............
soz
