Unsympathtic employer..

Okay so this has been bothering me for a few months. I have never had anything against my boss really and always felt I fitted in at work and was part of the team. I work hard and I know I am good at my job.

Basically I just wanted some advice, I have not had the best year with regards to bringing personal problems to work.

My mother got taken to hospital with a suspected stroke one morning a few months ago. I was pretty upset, however made the effort to go to work anyway and told my dad to call if things got worse. So I go in and explain to my supervisor that I may have to leave early if something else happens. She is fine about it. So I leave it till half an hour before Im due to finish and I get a call saying she is fine, but needs to stay in. I am a mess by this point, and I ask if it okay if I leave half hour early if I start early the next day, this is fine according to her as my actual boss is not in she just lets me go.

So the next day I get absolutly bollocked as apparantly I didnt tell anyone else. Well, I told my supervisor who had no problem with it and didnt say to explain to whoever what had happened. Another co worker was 'spitting blood' (yes...he actually used that phrase..) that I did not tell him. I explained I was sorry and it was just half an hour so I could go see mum. I got called in for a meeting with co worker supervisor and boss who then pretty much forced me into saying why I had to leave, despite being upset, only then to turn round and tell me that its not a reason to leave early. Then I found out co worker let somebody else leave early to get a car from the garage! I was livid.

So on sunday I was hit by an 80 tonne truck going 70 on the motorway, and spun round and dragged sideways with his bumper to the passenger side of my tiny MX5 for 200 yards, and then crushed us into a grass embankment. The police told me I was lucky he did not just go over the top of me. We were fine, just extremely shaken up and stuck 250 miles from home. You see...most people would be understanding that this has had a giant affect on me, and I have no car, and it was completely terrifying. I am lucky to still be here.

Obviosuly now I have weeks and weeks of annoying insurace calls and stuff, and was advised to see the doctor as my back and neck have completely seized up. This was yesterday afternoon, a day I had booked off anyway, and you can only get appointments in the morning. So I call and go and they told me to get to A&E today to have my back Xrayed. Yesterday I called my supervisor as my boss was not in and explained that Im really sorry but I got hit by a 80 tonne lorry and will not be in tomo. She was fine and said she would tell my boss, as obviously I cannot speak to him as he is not in.

So today my bf, who was in the car with me, went to work with a bad back and he wasnt as shaken as I was. They have now questioned him as to why i couldnt just go to A&E yesterday and then I could have come in today...well I am a complete mess, I cannot understand how they can be so unsympathtic.

So now I have to ring and explain that I didnt even realise it wa sthat serious, and he is going to make me feel bad for taking time off and point out I will not be paid.

Am I just being over sensitive or is this not a very understanding way to deal with this? I cant understand, its not even something I can help. I feel like I am being picked on for some reason, noone else gets treated like this. Am i being stupid?

is this a job that's important to your resume? if not, just give your notice and find something else. it sounds like they don't give a shit about their employees. it's pretty common.
if it's a job that you think you need to keep, go talk to human resources ASAP and describe how you're being treated. your concerns are legitimate and you've had very good excuses for missing work.

You are being completely reasonable.

I agree with the two posts above.

If you care about the job and want to stick around, definitely schedule a meeting with HR or whoever else has those responsibilities, and explain how you feel about it.

This is one of those situations where if you don't make your feelings and concerns known then they'll just keep acting the same way. So you have to speak up about it.

I don't think you're unreasonable at all. Having dealt in my time with two employers who have both been thoroughly understanding of difficult personal circumstances, I can only imagine what it must be like to have an employer so unsympathetic. The first situation is particularly surprising. You mother was ill in hospital for christ's sake, you hardly want to go traipsing around the place explaining to everyone there what the situ is, and I'm amazed that they could be so brutal about it ("spitting blood"... get to fuck, obviously this person has never been through anything like that) when your supervisor could quite easily have passed on the message. It's that supervisor's problem, not yours - if they have the authority to let you off early, then they have the authority to pass a simple message on.

- Parce que je ne pensais pas qu'il pleuvrait.

i've been very lucky with my current employer. my aunt died and within a month my father and grandfather also passed away. i was off for weeks and they didn't dock me any time nor make me use all my vacation time to make up for my absence.

Well its my first full time job so I kinda guess its important. Ive been there a year and was looking around anyway so think I may aswell go for something else!

I have taken today off aswell, and called them to let them know what happened when I went to get my back xrayed, yknow incase they care that Im not paralized. They seemed okayish just ridiculous that I have been made to feel bad over this! I am pretty sure that when I go in tomorrow (they actually said in front of my other half that if I took the rest of the week off I would be 'taking the piss') I will get dragged into a meeting with HR and be told that I will not be paid for the time off like usual, so I am definately going to make a point of saying that they have been unreasonable.

It annoys me as another co worker calls in sick for the stupidest reasons and never a bad word said...the recent few have been her kid not wanting to leave mummy at the school gate, apparantly that one gets you the whole day off and a bunch of sympathy and then the 'I locked myself out my house' excuse which they just accepted. Oh and the numerous times she leaves early because she has a hangover or something.

What ammuses me is what they would have done if I had been in hospital for weeks on end, would they comment then?! Ah well, I will just make a few sly comments about how nice all my other co workers have been as they have all asked after me and phoned to check I was okay! Shame about the rest!

As for the supervisor...its a shame as I get on well with her, but this isnt the first time they dont seem to have got the full message, Im a bit fed up with being dropped in it when I have actually done the right thing.

.

but is it a job that's important to your resume? i.e., will you be citing it as valuable experience, and is it in the field that you really want to pursue?

it's easy to think a job is a big deal when you're currently in it. but after you've quit, you'll say "whew!", feel 10 pounds lighter, and realized how poorly they treated you.
