| | | I fucked up on an essay I got the mark back for one and I only got 39% I have always got about double that before now. To make it worse I'm in my second year so it actually counts towards my final grade! Has this ever happened to anyone else? I feel like such a retard right now |

| | | Yeah, me.......2nd year was remarkedly harder for sure. And as a general rule, first year is more "finding your feet" on the topics and then 2nd year is when you really gotta put in the effort. You should ask your teacher/lecturer where you went wrong.... |

and yeah, as someone else said, you should definitely ask your marker where you went wrong. it'll help you for next time. |

| | | Ask the marker for some feedback and if you feel its unfair, ask for a remark. Sometimes you get markers who are just plain and simple dicks. |

| | | I hope that counts as a pass? That's the most important thing. On my degree it was 40% but they 'passed' 35% providing you averaged over 40% overall.
Was it late? I got a really good essay slashed down to a flat 40% because it was a day late, normally they docked percentages-per-day but this dickhead randomly just made it a pass. I can see why there's so many university shootings now.
Anyway, it's only 2nd year, like you said best to go back and ask what went wrong.

| | | I got 18% on a fucking MULTIPLE CHOICE exam! That was in my first year though so it didn't matter, I passed the unit, just.
As long as you average over 40% for that unit I wouldn't worry. Just try to do better in the other assignments to bring up your average. |

| | | I got 41% in my first exam of the semester...I was devastated, I did have a really long chat with my marker and now I'm hitting a 60 so I'm quite happy. I suggest talking too
I'm glad only my fourth year counts. hopefully I'll get the 50% to make it into honours and get that far though |

| | | 39% is a fail sadly, a min of 40% is required to pass. Although I have another essay due for that unit and an exam to do which are worth 75% of the total marks so I may be able to average out a better score. I have feedback from my tutor and as I am badly dyslexic am also in the process of getting my local education authority to fund extra support (such as getting me extra tutor time to go over my essays with me to help me to plan them better) and equipment (I'm getting a shiny new computer, printer and scanner from them!) |

But we don't do averages which blows, you have to pass ALL subjects, even if you did brill on all but one, that one could hold you back another year
I'm also convinced that lecturers who give 39% on essay style questions are fucking dicks, where there's a certain amount of subjectivity. Go on , that extra one percent won't fucking kill you to put it in |

| | | i failed one of my essays in second year and i was SO pissed off about it - my lecturer marked me down because i thought i hadn't understood that the literature i was writing about was ironic and therefore i'd missed the whole point of it - whereas in actual fact it was SO DAMN OBVIOUS that it was ironic that i didnt think it was worth mentioning. pffff. but despite that i still passed that module and i still passed the year with a high 2:1 overall.
having said that, do get your work remarked if you think youve been given an unfair mark. i couldnt be arsed and i kinda wish i had now. |

| | | We had grades instead of percentages and yeah I got a couple of C- essays (also a D- in first year, but she gave a shit mark to everyone). Don't feel too bad it happens to most people, especially when you are trying to do 3 or 4 assessments at once. You'll make it up on your other work. |

| | | i got 42% once in a multiple choice, open book, first year exam. no fucking excuse, but i put everything into that, i just really suck at stats.
can you have it remarked? or ask to re-do it? however my uni do this crappy thing where if you fail (below 40) you can retake, but then you get capped at 40. hardly seems worthwhile. |

if you don't get second markers then i would say maybe try and talk to him and see why he did it, possibly even broach a remark. you have to be careful about going over academics heads to get a remark as it can stir up a shit storm.
all my work had to be in my 4pm and was done electronically, so if you were 3 seconds late you were capped at 40 percent. for the first time in my life, i never handed anything in late

| | what? this was an actual, assessed essay or just a class essay? it def. counts towards your end-of-year mark?
i always fuck up the class essays. i don't care. everyone else is there beavering away in the library weeks before it's due in and i think they're mental. also, if you totally balls up all your class essays, they think you're a bit special and give you really easy questions in seminars. earlier today my sole contribution to a two hour seminar was "that's determinism" and as we were packing up our stuff he congratulated me for it hehe
this is why i hate essays. i wanted to switch my assessment to 100% exam but missed the two second window where the thingy allows you to change it on the thingy online. exams all the way. i swear the adrenaline gets me going, i fucking love 'em! ALSO, in exam questions, you aren't expected to remember massive quotes and citations and stats and you don't have to write a bibliography at the end of your answer: suits me down to the ground
if it is assessed, it might be worth doing as insomnia suggests and asking for a re-mark. otherwise, definitely talk to your tutor because this one failure and it prompting you to go and see him/her will probably mean your future essays are going to be loads better and you'll have a far clearer idea about what you're meant to do.
and on that note, fuck it's 21.09 - library time for me!! :rock and roll: |

I hate essays at uni as I never know if Im answering it right until I get my marks back. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | |
