Never had a tattoo

I have no tattoos but for ages I have wanted a cherry blossom on my side. But...
- I am really concered about finding someone good, I am so scared of having a shit tattoo, how do I find a good artist?
- I am not sure exactly how I want it to look (size etc.), would they help with this?
- Do you think I should have something little done first, y'know see if I can cope? I was thinking something to do with my birthday and having it done around then or maybe just one litttle blossom then they can put the rest around it?
Thanks people. xxx

1) Research. & not being cheap. you see a good tattoo, ask people where they got them. ask your friends about tattoo artist in your area & then actually go to the shops, look at portfolios, talk to them about your ideas.

you can't be cheap about a tattoo either. this is on your body for life. so invest in something you want there for life. typically you won't get a deal on a tattoo with a good artist unless you've been going to them awhile, so if you're getting a deal for the first time... it is questionable. ie: avoid tattoo coupons. (this is a new trend in my area, and i can't believe people are falling for them.)

try bmezine for actual tattoo examples, or image google cherry blossoms for lifelike pictures you'd like to turn into a tattoo.

and no, tattoos are going to hurt no matter what. & they all hurt varing different places. i handled a 5 hr session on my arm like cake. but could barely handle a 45 minute session on both of my feet. so to just "get one" to see if you can do it, is not going to make a difference. just do the one you want, and brave it.

Nah I wouldn't be cheap and I would even be willing to travel (within reason). I have found loads of pictures so I have an idea of what I want and don't want, but I don't know anyone who has a tattoo I find amazing. Well I have a fiend with a nice one but its completly different to what I want.

well you know the ideas of what you want can be enough for the right tattoo artist.

if you're able to explain it, the artist can draw something up & you can go from there as well. you just have to be able to say you don't like something if you don't like it. a lot of people have a hard time telling their artist if they don't like stuff they've drawn up for them.

where do you live?
basically, what tigz said.

and tattoos hurt, but you'll manage.

i got a tiny new one done last week, by hand. ie no machine. that didn't hurt at all. i'm in love with this technique and i want them all done this way

All of this.

Also yeah the arm didn't hurt much at all but I saw my mother get one on her shoulder and she is tough as nails, her face started to go a bit white from the pain.
