Please take this survey regarding body mods for a friend of mine!

Posting this for someone else as I know quite a few of you have body modifications. If you could email the response to her at p.tah@hotmail.com that would be great.

She needs people with and without any body mods to fill in a survey for a school project. They are below.

-----------------------------
This is survey ONE
It is for people without significant body modifications. By that i mean:
-'common' piercings - ears, nose, navel, etc.
-small, easy to cover tattoos

Is Body Modification Becoming More Socially Acceptable?
My name is Peita Keir and I am a year 12 student at Mater Dei Catholic College. For my Community and family Studies class I have to complete an Independent Research Project. I have chosen to examine whether body modification is becoming more socially acceptable. Your participation in the survey is greatly appreciated.

Age:
Gender:
Occupation:

1: Would you ever consider significant body modification (e.g. major tattoo work, scarification, sub-dermal implants, multiple/extensive piercing)

2: What is your opinion of people with significant body modifications (for example, do you believe any particular stereotypes?)

3: Have to ever witnessed or taken part in prejudice or hostility towards a person or group of people due to their body modifications?

If so, can you describe the incident:

4: Do you think there is an undue amount of prejudice towards people with significant body modifications? Why or why not?

5: Do you think body modification is becoming more widely accepted in society?
Please explain you answer.

6: Do you think it is appropriate for people to be asked to cover or (in the case of piercings) remove their mods in the workplace? Why or why not?

----------------------------------------------

Okay, second survey, for people with significant/extensive/uncommon/etc. Mods.

Age: 23
Gender: female
Occupation: English language student

1: Would you ever consider significant body modification (e.g. major tattoo work, scarification, sub-dermal implants, multiple/extensive piercing)

I like tattoos, I might get one in the future.

2: What is your opinion of people with significant body modifications (for example, do you believe any particular stereotypes?)

That depends on what their tattoos depict and what their general demeanour is. Many different types of people have tattoos and piercings now that it's become more of a mainstream thing. Body art can give you a hint as to what kind of music people are into, but apart from that it won't tell you much.

3: Have to ever witnessed or taken part in prejudice or hostility towards a person or group of people due to their body modifications?

I think tattoos of dolphins, yin-yang, chinese "signs" and tribal patterns are tacky. I also hate eyebrow piercings. But I wouldn't say I'm prejudiced because of that, it's just my personal opinion. I have however witnessed how people tend to be "scared" of people who have extensive body mods, because they think it looks intimidating.

If so, can you describe the incident:

4: Do you think there is an undue amount of prejudice towards people with significant body modifications? Why or why not?

In the past, only sailors, bikers and prostitutes would have tattoos, so I suppose it's because of that.

5: Do you think body modification is becoming more widely accepted in society?
Please explain you answer.

Among the younger generation, it's generally more widely accepted.

6: Do you think it is appropriate for people to be asked to cover or (in the case of piercings) remove their mods in the workplace? Why or why not?

It's to be expected. Like I said above, there are still people who are intimidated or put off by it. So if you have any kind of job that involves interacting with customers it's something you will just have to deal with. However I do hope that this will change in the future, since it's becoming more commonplace. When you think about it, it's rather irrational to be apprehensive of somebody just because they've got a tattoo on their arm or a ring in their lip.

(you can email this to her. my email address reveals my full name and university, which i'm not super comfortable with a random having. sorry if that's a pain in the ass)

Age: 22
Gender: female
Occupation: kindergarten teacher

1: Would you ever consider significant body modification (e.g. major tattoo work, scarification, sub-dermal implants, multiple/extensive piercing)
no... not so much. i would get a small tattoo or small piercing. but nothing major.

2: What is your opinion of people with significant body modifications (for example, do you believe any particular stereotypes?)
i think sometimes people with alot of body modifications are immature. and that perhaps there's a connection between body modifications (which are against the socio-cultural norm) and the sortof adolescent urge to not conform, and make it known to everyone that you're a noncomformist.
but on the whole, i don't see someone with a body mod and assume anything, except that the person is probably just normal and bored with their lives (just like the rest of us).

3: Have to ever witnessed or taken part in prejudice or hostility towards a person or group of people due to their body modifications?
hmmm.. my parents were incredibly angry when my younger brother got "snake bite" piercings on his face, as well as a bar piercing across the back of his neck, but that was hostility moreso than prejudice. but no, i've never witnessed any other harassment. but then again, i'm from California. I'd venture to guess that there are hostilities in other places (ie: the midwest)

4: Do you think there is an undue amount of prejudice towards people with significant body modifications? Why or why not?
no. i think if you decide to get body modifications, you also accept any attention that stems from having said modifications, negative or positive.

5: Do you think body modification is becoming more widely accepted in society? Please explain you answer.
yes i do. i think 2 or 3 generations ago it was viewed in a very different light. but as time goes on, and people adjust to the concept, it becomes less shocking. i mean, mainstream americans walking around with tattoos or piercings was NOT common at all before the 1960's, so i can understand the attitudes my grandparents and parents might have about body mods. but within my generation, i think it's no big deal.

6: Do you think it is appropriate for people to be asked to cover or (in the case of piercings) remove their mods in the workplace? Why or why not?
yes and no. i think if the modifications are so outlandish that they take away from a person's ability to do a job properly, then yes, they should be removed. but from a legal perspective, i think it's not only unfair but unconstitutional to ban personal expression in the form of body modifications.
