the link between diet and breakouts

Some people claim that what you eat affects your skin, others say it doesn't. I asked a dermatologist a couple of years ago and all she could tell me was that there is no scientific evidence to prove it.

I read an interview with Ole Henriksen (the salon-brand skincare guy) and he said that his acne improved considerably once he switched to a low GI diet. I've read elsewhere too that too much sugar and refined carbohydrates will exacerbate acne.

My sister says that if she eats peanuts her skin will go crazy, and I've heard about people reacting badly to random things like tomatoes

What is your experience?

Over the weekend I had a NASTY breakout on my chin. I hadn't been eating anything unusual, but I did eat dessert every day that weekend and had a couple of beers (and as we all know, beer is very bad, both carb-wise and GI-wise).

Since monday I've been eating fairly well and I've avoided very sugary things (I did eat some 70% chocolate and some grapes yesterday though). The breakout on my chin is healing (slowly, though) and I haven't gotten any new pimples.....

Anyway, I'd like to hear other people's thoughts on this....

i find weather makes much more of a difference than diet, cause my diet almost never changes, but when it's humid as fuck i get big hummers on my chin and when it's cold/winter i have great skin

hmmm...well, I have personally noticed that what I eat relates to how my skin looks. If I cut out fats, grease, sweets, etc. my skin does look healthier. BUT with this humid weather I have been breaking out more. I've been eating healthy al week, and I've really only had one or two pimples. Tonight though I'm breaking out the Ben and Jerry's.

i always break out if i eat too many hot dogs. or mcdonalds. both give me cystic acne.

how can people say diet has no impact? maybe it is difficult to prove in clinical trials, or there is no incentive for people to conduct such trials, but come on. it makes a difference, for most individuals i would imagine.

i agree about the weather though. nyc - hot and humid + pollution = bad skin

los angeles dry and mild weather = beautiful, healthy clear skin, even with the smog

loads of factors but not enough water and not massaging your face DOES NOT HELP. Picking at it with unclean hands...
I don't care what they say, I think diet does have a factor, my breakouts are worst at Christmas and lots of fries and chocolate in the past have proved it.
