Bikini line woes

Wasn't sure whether to put it into make up, hair etc since this is technically about hair, but then decided to put it here.

Normally I use hair removal cream on my bikini line, but it grows back annoyingly fast. So last month I decided to wax it at home (I don't have the money to wax at a salon, I really don't) so I bought some veet home wax strips and had a go. Now initially, all was well, the hair came off pretty well and although my bikini line was left looking pretty red and angry, probably because I had to go over some parts of it twice, the packet said that would be normal for up to 24 hours.

This was LIES! My bikini line resembled a sunburnt raw chicken breast with measles for about 5 days. I seemed to get some ingrown hairs pretty much immediately, but I couldn't even exfoliate them because my bikini line was already raw. Then for about a week or so, all was well and I thought, okay, this isn't too bad. Then a SECOND wave of ingrown hairs started, that oodles of exfoliating still hasn't properly sorted. However hair grow back has been pleasing slow- a month later there is about the same amount of hair there would have been about 5 days to a week after veeting.

One of my friends suggested there would be less skin soreness afterwards if I whacked on talcum powder first, before waxing, but I am unconvinced. What secrets do other people know? And how do you prevent ingrown hairs save for exfoliation?

I don't want to experiment too much because last time my bikini line was so hideous, I refused to let my boyfriend look at it for a week (since I like despite the length of our relationship to remain some semblance of being a sexy siren, not possible with the plague look-a-like bikini line).

After one attempt at self-waxing my bikini line, I've come to the conclusion that it is just not a good idea.

Although I didn't get any ingrown hairs! I hardly ever get them anyway, so maybe I'm just lucky that way.

But I did bruise the shit out of myself, and even managed to draw blood on one side. It is not attractive.

The talc powder thing is meant to work but it never occurred to me to do that. I think it's b/c it prevents the wax from making so much contact with the skin. Did you do that and still end up with it looking all angry? I might give it another go with that strategy in mind.
