Question Official line on painkillers/alcohol?

I hear conflicting things.

For example I had three and a bit glasses of wine this evening, but a little while has passed since then - I feel sober but that means nothing. Now I am having cramps, and will not be able to sleep unless this is sorted out.

If I take paracetamol/ibruprofen how badly will this affect my liver? I abuse it enough as it is, and I'm getting paranoid about it. I will certainly take it now - I don't think I'm going to do a Heath Ledger on a couple of paracetamol and a couple of glasses of wine. But how bad for you is this?

I know some people who would never dream of touching painkillers if they'd been drinking, and others who drink even though they take pretty serious pain medication.

I am also drinking Valerian tea, on the box of which it says "avoid alcohol" but I mean again I'll never sleep otherwise. Thats why I'm not just blocking the pain with a bit more wine - drinking over a certain amount before bed means I either can't sleep or wake up in 3 hours time.

What rules do other people follow, not just for this amount but in general? I'm not used to these sudden bursts of cirrhosis paranoia.

NO to paracetemol and alcohol. I drink on ibuprofen all the time though. If i have the stuff with codeine, though, I get well loopy.

how about not mixing alcohol and meds together. then you might feel better and sleep better. you're never supposed to mix alcohol with drugs. whattaya stoopidasumpthin. It will make you sick every time somehow- even if you don't puke. see, you can't even sleep. drop the wine, take the codeine it's better for you.

I haven't had problems with ibuprofen and alcohool, but don't know about paracetamol.

On the same line: is it ok to drink while on antibiotics? Like beer and such?

Yeah I took ibruprofen. Just on guesswork that it wouldn't be as bad.
I've seen people drink on antibiotics and get ill, but it doesn't appear to be always.

Its not something you'd do on purpose. I mean, if you were planning on taking pain meds of any kind generally you wouldn't drink - and if you drank enough you wouldn't need them. Its more when you're caught out. If a couple of glasses of wine and a couple of painkillers are seen as acceptable and non damaging things, I'm thinking they're probably not THAT bad together. I mean, its just the liver struggling with having to do more than one thing at once, its not like they mix in the stomach and become immediately super toxic.
