Wasp stings

I got stung by a wasp on my grad night and had a really bad reaction. The little fecker caught me on my way into the hotel and stung me in that weird place beside the ear near the temple. At first, I just felt the pain of the sting, which sucked and freaked me out, but at least I felt fine overall. But then I started to feel really faint and nauseous, and got bad physical pain in my stomach and my head. It was almost like my brain throbbed with the nasty venomous wasp fluid, and my body ached with excruciating pain. I put up with it for a bit, figuring that once I got some food into me I'd feel better. But it just got worse and worse. I ended up being taken into hospital and given tranquillisers, the pain was so bad. When I got home, the pain returned and I had a really bad night of insomnia, sickness and PAIN. And no, I hadn't drank too much.

Now it's two days later and I still don't feel quite right. I haven't been stung since I was neigh heigh, but that time it was on my arm so it didn't feel so weird. And my dad sucked out the venom?? I've always thought wasp venom was fairly harmless, but now I'm worried it did something funny, especially as I was stung in that weird place. I still feel delirious and have a sore tummy.

I know it's in my genes to have bad reactions to wasp stings. I remember my mam spending nearly a week in hospital a couple of years ago when she got stung, and my aunt and granny have had simiilar episodes.

So I'm just wondering whether I should go back to the doctor or not, and am interested in other people's experiences with wasp stings. How do you react to them? Spray something on it, complain a bit and then forget about it? Would you be like "ah shit, got stung by a bleddy wasp" and not mention it again? How have you treated wasp stings in the past? AND HAS ANYONE BEEN STUNG IN THE HEAD?

Ouch! Never been stung but I've lost a testicle to orchitis so I know what pain is like.

i got stung for the first time in my life this year, it was fucking horrible
i didn't have a terrible reaction the way you did though, but it hurt for hours and i couldn't stop crying i was told to put a shitload of vinegar on it and it sort of stopped the pain, maybe that could work for you?

des, did you get the stinger out?

my daughter was stung by a wasp this summer for the first time. i was expecting a reaction but luckily nothing but the scare and the soreness. (and i don't think it had time to leave the stinger)
we put a baking soda/water paste on it within 10 minutes.
someone else we know said they used mud.

maybe you should call the hospital and talk to the dr. that treated you.

benadryl?

Thanks for the advice, cheshirecat. The stung area only pained me at the start. Now it's just itchy. What I'm concerned about is the effect the venom is having on my body. I've heard horror stories about people not having enough white blood cells in their system to cope with wasp venom and yuckyuckyuck

cala, when I heard the wasp in my ear I started batting the area frantically so I'm assuming I batted the stinger out. I think I'd know if the stinger was still intact?

Thanks for the baking soda tip. I'll remember that for when I get stung next time /thinking positively.

I think I will go back to the doctor because I still feel quite sick. I just didn't want to look all damsel-in-distress like "HELP ME, I GOT STUNGGG BY A WASP!" Aw well, hopefully he'll be able to tell me what's up. Maybe the nausea and sore tummy isn't even connected to the sting. It really feels like it, though.
