Cervical Ectopy/ Erosion

Well I went for my first smear test today (I'm 23, we don't do them noramlly til you are 25 in the UK) and it turns out I have cervical ectopy/erosion. It also bleed so much when she touched it I now have to go have a colposcopy (not cool) and I have to go to haematology to get checked out for some girly version of haemophilia. All in all, not a great appointment.

So two questions:
1) what do they do about cervical ectopy?
2) what exactly is involved in a colposcopy and is it painful?

I'm in the UK and 22 and I've had a smear test too. I don't know why they say on the website 25 - 64 because they've been sending me letters since I moved here and registered with a doctor.
ANyways I'm really sorry for you and I hope you're okay. I have no idea what they do for those things but I did a google search and found:
cervical ectopy
Quote:
Cervical ectopy is not necessarily an abnormal condition and does appear temporarily in a lot of women under hormonal influence during puberty and pregnancy. The use of the oral combined contraceptive pill is also known to favor its reappearance or persistence.
Quote:
Treatment is rarely needed for this condition. In cases when they become a nuisance cauterization may be used to eliminate ectopic cells.

Thanks! I ended up having a smear test cause of breakthrough bleeding. One of my friends had cervical ectopy and had the cells burnt off, which seems to have fixed it, so I am hoping they can do the same for me. I am hoping they don't give me a cone biopsy/loop excision, because I really have no desire to bleed for four weeks continuously.

Ugh no. That doesn't sound great. Hopefully it won't come to that for you
I wonder why they are getting me to have smear tests though?! I just thought it was from 18/whenever you start having sex + . Maybe it varies between surgeries or something? I'm confused.

Well the government line is (now) that no one under 25 needs them, because there was such a low risk of finding something wrong. But they sometimes do smear tests alongside swabs for STIs, or maybe if you have a history of cervical cancer in the family, or if you started having sex very early. Or you just have a pervert nurse in your surgery!

I think I just have a pervert nurse?! Or I look like someone who might have STDs but they didn't like to say? I'm scared now. I can't stand people looking at my vagina either - it's traumatic for me .

Likewise! My mother told me I was being pathetic, but I was like, I'm sorry, I don't really like my bajingo being stared at and prodded with metal instruments by a stranger. I feel like its rather of a violation of my personal space. And now I get to have someone look up it with binoculars...

I had a colposcopy for HPV...some of my cervical cells were burned off. The area was frozen beforehand but I had cramps afterwards and spent most of the day lying down.

Right, I will remember to book off the afternoon after I have any of that done! Dunno what they are going to do at my gyane appointment yet, or what is going on since there is a postal strike...

Yeah, I personally was planning on waiting til 25, then when they started sending the nagging letters, claiming I was a virgin til I died/got pregnant. Unfortunately stupid breakthrough bleeding on the pill that wouldn't go away put paid to that. I avoided the bajingo scrape for two years, but finally I capitulated. It isn't actually all that bad. Its not great, but it wasn't as terrible as I thought it was going to be. Obviously would have felt a lot happier about it had I not had to go have a bunch of strangers at the hospital look at my bajingo.

I'm sorry, I gave you the wrong info...what I was describing, that gives you cramps, is a LEEP. You have it done if the colposcopy shows something of concern.

A colposcopy is about the same as having a pap. They stick a camera up you to look at your cells, and that's about it. In my case, I got to see my cervix on a monitor...pretty freaky. I was really nervous and upset so it hurt me when they put the speculum in as I was clenching.

Yeah, I did remember the website saying something like "Its really cool, you might get to see your cervix on a television screen/mirror" and I was like woo hoo. Not. I'd rather live in ignorance about the appearance of my cervix.

I read about LEEP. Apparently you can bleed after LEEPs or cone biopsies for up to 6 weeks. Which sucks and definitely would be me because I have a suspected bleeding disorder. Things which would suck = 6 weeks of bajingo bleeding.

Cervical cancer isn't usually genetic so that's kinda weird. You're meant to get them after you start having sex cause its the COCK and whatever might be on it that causes cancer.

Well they are unsure about the genetic component of most causes of cancer, so they generally run with the family history thing (or so my doc's surgery poster tells me).

yes they use those tong things to hold you open like in a pap, then use this camera thingee up there (it's TINY don't worry lol) and they spray this what was explained to me as being some kind vinegary concoction up there because it shows certain cells in a different way or something like that. you can watch it on the tv in front of you lol, it's pretty weird. not painful at all, although the weird liquid thing they spray you with feels kind of odd. it will make you make this face but it won't hurt.
