| | | Cervical Cancer Vaccine (for the Aussies) Is anyone else going to get this? (Not sure if it is available in all countries yet)
I think I will get it, it's free for women under 26.
------------------------------------------------
There is great news for young women and girls in Australia - a new vaccine that can protect them against the cause of most cervical cancers.
The vaccine protects women against certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), which are known to cause 7 out of 10 cases of cervical cancer and 9 out of 10 cases of genital warts.
Starting in April 2007, the Australian Government will be providing the new vaccine free to all women and girls aged between 12 and 26 through the National HPV Vaccination Program.
------------------------------------------------
I wonder if it has any side effects cause I get sick everytime I get vaccinated. Hate to imagine what they are.

So for me that means my arm will be like a football and I'll be delirious.. still. Will get it anyway... and I despiseeeeeeeee needles. |

| | Please get it ladies. I was finally diagnosed with HPV in my mid 20's (Probably had it since age 20 but it was unknown back then) and then shortly thereafter it was discovered I had cervical cancer. I've gone through numerous treatments- short of a hysterectomy- and that's next on the list. I am so thankful there is a vaccine available to women. Take care of yourselves- you deserve it. |

i'm kind of weird about immunisation (i would never have a flu shot for example) but i would get vaccinated for HPV and i would want my daughter vaccinated too.

| | | I can't wait for the NHS to actually agree to give it to people. Since its £450 I'm loathe to get it now because I know if I do, within days it will be free.
I love vaccines. Short-term pain is always worth the long-term benefits. |

| | | I'm considering getting it - but I'm worried about any long term effects. It's only a new vaccine. |

| | | HPV (the human papillomavirus) causes cervical cancer. It does not necessarily develop into the disease. Cervical cancer can be prevented if:
1. Girls should receive the HPV vaccine.
2. Regular paps should be performed with a liquid kit because it provides the most accurate results.
3. Women thirty and over should receive a liquid pap smear and ask for an HPV test.
4. You ask your Doctor for an annual reminder.
Please pass along the information to your friends and family.
Cervical cancer is preventable. |

| | | I believe I'm getting this vaccine soon. Here in Illinois, they want girls around ages 11 and 12 to definantly get it, i think, or something like that. Not sure if schools are making it mandatory yet. |

I hate pap smears. The one I had in the Netherlands hurt so much I nearly vomited. In Australia it never hurt. |

| | | Yeah Il is supposedly making it compulsory at a certain age.
PEtals - don't be afraid. It's a lot easier if you breathe deeply, or um, take a valium or have a drink? If you tell the gyno that you are freaked they should be more sensitive to that and go easy.
I always wear socks even though it looks silly. Does everyone? |

I'll look at the roof pretending this isn't happening until it is over in one minutes time. | |
