| | | Need help finding information Ok so, when i was about 13/14 the doctors discovered i have an extra valve in my heart.
I want to find out more about this - i never used to but i do now.
Is it common etc. I've googled a whole bunch of things but i cannot find any info on someone having an extra valve in their heart.
Help? |

| | | If it was serious i would have thought you'd be called in for anual checkups. I've never heard of anything like that before, are you sure it was an extra valve? but i guess if you are concerned go see your doctor. |

Yeah im 100% sure its an extra valve, i also have a heart murmur.. The docs always check my heart when i go there. I occasionally have to have one of those heart monitors put on me for a day or two. There are certain things i have to do, like i cant have blood in my mouth, i have to have amoxilyn before i go to the dentist, before i got my tongue pierced etc. I'm technically supposed to stay away from smoking, and probably drugs that increase my heart rate. I think most of these things are just precautions though.
But the way they told me that i had an extra valve- i just assumed that it was common - but i cant find any info on it |

I'm not sure, about the valve thing. I've had most of the tests you've mentioned over the years, and our family has a history of things like that. I think it might be more common than you think though, allot of people never have these things picked up on. But the only valve problem i know about it mitral valve prolapse, which is pretty much all the precautions you described, things like penicillin before dental treatments. |

Maybe i should just ask the doctor to give me more info or point me towards some other specialist that can? I just don't feel like going to the doctor lately - she's a psycho. |

there really isnt much information out there and ive not heard of this, so it's rare. it looks as though the people discussing it needed surgery. maybe yours isnt interfering with heart function as much as others can? im sure youre seeing a cardiologist, and have had an echocardiogram. those are the first two steps.
